Hartnett Favourites
Colour: Blue His Life The brown eyed, 6'3 Josh Hartnett was born on July 21, 1978 in St. Paul, Minnesota, contrary to popular belief that he was born in San Francisco, which is, in fact, where his mother lives. Growing up with his younger siblings; Jessica, Jake and Joe (his mother must've had an affinity with "J" names), he attended the grade school, Nativity of Our Lord and continued to Creitin Derham Hall. He played football until he tore a knee ligament, to which his theatre-going aunt convinced him to try out for a part in the production of Tom Sawyer. At 18, he graduated from South High School. Prompted by his mother, he moved to New York and attended SUNY (State University of New York) to persue a career in theatre. However, he didn't stay long as "I went to theater school and got booted, got kicked out" Surely not this lanky sweetie! When asked why, he laughed and replied: "Ahhh...why. Lots of reasons, lots of reasons. Well, it's a state run school, and they don't really have a lot of funding for the arts, so they can't really afford to graduate everyone they take in. They took in 26 of us and the first day they told us only 7 of us would graduate. And that's not a good position to put a volatile young actor in, to pit them against each other. So anyway, I told them that's probably not the best way to go about it, in this very eloquently written letter. And they really didn't appreciate it. And there was also something about the professor's daughter... Moving to the city of Los Angeles, he captured the role of the deliquent teen on the ABC drama, Cracker. There he played Robert Pastorelli's son. Although the critics loved it, the audience didn't. This didn't affect the resiliant teen too much as he bounced right back - onto the big screen. He soon appeared in Halloween: H20, the follow up to the original movie...20 years later. In this flick, he played John Strode, son of Jamie Lee Curtis' character, Laurie and nephew of Mike Myers. This role was so well acted that he earned a heads up for a nomination in the MTV Movie Awards for "Best Breakthrough Performance". Next up: The Faculty, costarring Salma Hayek, Robert Patrick, Elijah Wood and Jon Stewart, playing the cool kid, Zeke, who finds out that aliens are (as suspected), real, and not only that - they're the teachers in his school. This sci-fi, thriller movie was directed by the well known Kevin Williamson. With this role, he turned heads of teenage girls throughout the country. Although The Faculty wasn't a box office smash, it got his career going on a roll. Hartnett was fortunate enough to land a role on a film of a different genre, going for a sweet romance drama next, Here on Earth, beside Leelee Sobieski and Chris Klein. He played Jasper, Samantha's (Sobieski) best friend and childhood sweetie. He gives her up to Klein to keep her happy as she struggles with a terminal illness. He apparently made a big hit with the teen department, however, and in 1999, was chosen as one of Teen People Magazine's "21 Hottest Stars Under 21". He has since then appeared in the well known The Virgin Suicides with known actors and actresses including Kirsten Dunst. The film was received well by the audiences. He the continued to the Diane Keaton comedy, Town and Country as Tom Stoddard. Most recently, he has appeared with fellow co-actor Ben Affleck in a historical drama, Pearl Harbor where his character, Danny, falls in love with Rafe's (Affleck) girlfriend after he is presumed dead. When Rafe returns, alive, the love triangle continues through the ravages of the infamous Pearl Harbor bombing. This movie made a huge mark on the box office and nearly broke the record for highest grossing Memorial Day weekend profits. He's not just an actor, however, and has already set up a production company of his own. Next up for him is O, an updated version of Shakespeare's Othello, playing Hugo Goulding, a character based on the original Shakespeare creation, Iago. This time, he acts alongside Mekhi Phifer, Andrew Keegan and Julia Stiles. Another film he just wrapped up is 40 Days and 40 Nights, as Matt Sullivan, a young man who vows to remain celibate during Lent after a horrible breakup, but meets the girl of his dreams (Shannyn Sossamon) and finds he can't do anything about it. His latest project was filming another war epic, Black Hawk Down, playing a staff sergeant along with co-star Ewan McGregor although he may be starting a new film Over and Out soon. |
